How do refunds and disputes work?
Last updated September 29, 2026
You can refund a customer’s payment by asking the AI or from a dashboard, and the customer gets the full amount back. If a customer disputes a charge with their bank instead, the disputed amount and a dispute fee come out of your balance. You can choose to challenge it with the AI’s help.
This article is about refunding your own customers. If you’re looking for a refund on your Repaint subscription, that’s covered in Repaint’s refund policy.
Refunding a customer
To refund an order, you can ask the AI and tell it which payment to refund. You can refund the full amount or part of it. If you handle refunds often, the AI can add a refund button to a dashboard so you or your team can do it without asking each time.
When you refund a customer:
- The customer gets the full refunded amount back on their original payment method.
- That amount is deducted from your Repaint balance.
- The processing fee from the original payment isn’t returned.
Example prompts
“Refund Maria Lopez’s order from yesterday. The item arrived broken.”
“Give order 1042 a $10 partial refund for the late delivery.”
Automating refunds
You can describe your refund policy and have the AI handle it automatically. For example, it can let customers cancel a booking for a full refund up to 24 hours before, or refund subscribers who cancel within their first week.
“If a customer cancels their appointment more than 48 hours in advance, refund them automatically. If it’s less than 48 hours, keep the deposit.”
Disputes and chargebacks
A dispute, also called a chargeback, happens when a customer asks their bank to reverse a charge instead of asking you for a refund. When that happens:
- The disputed amount is deducted from your Repaint balance.
- A dispute fee is also deducted. The amount depends on your country.
- You can accept the dispute, or challenge it by showing the charge was valid.
Challenging a dispute
You can challenge a dispute through the AI. It can pull evidence from your workspace, like order details and delivery confirmation. Then it helps you put together your response.
Challenging a dispute costs a second dispute fee. If you win, that fee and the disputed amount are both returned to your balance.
“A customer disputed their $180 order from last month. Help me challenge it and gather the evidence that they received it.”
Negative balances
If refunds or disputes leave your balance negative, your future sales cover it. If a negative balance stays large, Repaint may charge your payout bank account or the payment method on file to recover it.
A high refund rate can also lead Repaint to delay payouts or hold a reserve.
